Natural mineralized fractures from the Montney-Doig unconventional reservoirs (Western Canada Sedimentary Basin): Timing and controlling factors

چکیده

Characterizing the origin of natural fractures in organic-rich fine-grained deposits is key to constraining permeability evolution these potential source rocks and tight reservoirs, as well assess hydraulic connectivity fluid systems which they develop. Differently oriented calcite-filled (i.e. veins), hosted by mudrocks Lower-Middle Triassic Montney-Doig unconventional resource play (Western Canada Sedimentary Basin), were sampled sub-surface cores from British Columbia. A multidisciplinary approach (including sedimentology, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, petrography, O–C–Sr isotope geochemistry inclusion microthermometry) was applied host-rocks fracture filling calcites. The results demonstrate relevance usefulness such studies gather insights on: 1) lithology-related factors controlling occurrence; 2) timing opening circulating paleo-fluids; 3) openness system through time. More specifically, host-rock facies (particularly grain size) vertical changes appear be leading occurrence. less relevant role played occurrence diagenetic carbonates, while TOC possibly did not control Three generations calcite cemented identified. Vertical (first generation) post-dated onset oil generation (Late Cretaceous). Horizontal, bedding-parallel (second gas opened close maximum burial, corresponding peak hydrocarbon (CH4) Cretaceous - Early Paleogene). (third horizontal ones during basin uplift (Middle Late consistent petrographic geochemical features all cements point parent fluids equilibrium with lithologies, that behaved a closed Paleogene time; this would support hypothesis that, at least portion investigated, Montney Fm also acted rock system.

Hydraulic Fracturing and Seismicity in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin

The development of most unconventional oil and gas resources relies upon subsurface injection of very large volumes of fluids, which can induce earthquakes by activating slip on a nearby fault. During the last 5 years, accelerated oilfield fluid injection has led to a sharp increase in the rate of earthquakes in some parts of North America. In the central United States, most induced seismicity ...

Origin and evolution of formation waters , Alberta Basin , Western Canada Sedimentary Basin . I . Chemistry

-Inorganic chemical analyses and short-chain aliphatic acid content are used to interpret the origin and compositional evolution of formation waters in the Alberta portion of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Forty-three formation water samples were obtained covering a stratigraphic interval from Devonian to Cretaceous. The data show that: (1) there is a subaerially evaporated brine compone...

Origin and evolution of formation waters, Alberta Basin, Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. II. Isotope systematics and water mixing

-Isotopic measurements (Sr, O, D) on formation waters from the Alberta Basin have been made, covering a stratigraphic range from Devonian to Upper Cretaceous. These measurements, combined with chemical compositional trends, give evidence for two distinct water regimes. One hydrological regime is composed of waters hosted in Devonian-Lower Cretaceous reservoirs, the other waters from Upper Creta...

Further evaluation of the Re-Os geochronometer in organic-rich sedimentary rocks: A test of hydrocarbon maturation effects in the Exshaw Formation, Western Canada Sedimentary Basin

Re-Os isotopic analyses of a single organic-rich sedimentary rock unit (ORS) of known depositional age, and at three levels of regional hydrocarbon maturity, show that hydrocarbon maturation does not affect the ability the Re-Os chronometer to yield a depositional age for such rocks. We present Re-Os isotope analyses from the Late Devonian Exshaw Formation in the subsurface of the Western Canad...

Helium flux from a sedimentary basin.

The tritium-3He ages of groundwaters collected from the Saijo Basin in Japan were measured. The ages vary between 11.7 and 16.3 years. The 4He flux of >3 x 10(4) atoms/cm2 s is calculated by the 4He concentrations and ages. In addition the helium flux of 8.3 x 10(5) atoms/cm2 s is calculated at the Higashi-Niigata gas field in Japan. The above two estimates are consistent with the continental h...
