Natural killer cell activity in untreated systemic lupus erythematosus.

With strictly selected controls natural killer cell activity was evaluated in 10 untreated patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Natural killer levels of the patients were significantly lower than those of the age- and sex-matched normal controls. Natural killer levels, however, did not correlate with disease activity.

Effects of ultraviolet irradiation on natural killer cell function in systemic lupus erythematosus.

In vitro irradiation with long wavelength ultraviolet light (UV-A), in clinically relevant dosages, of a natural killer cell line containing cell preparations from 17 control subjects reduced natural killer cell cytotoxicity with the cell line K562 as target. The spontaneous function of natural killer cells from 12 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) correlated inversely with the o...

Natural killer cell in systemic lupus erythematosus. Defects in effector lytic activity and response to interferon and interferon inducers.

Spontaneous cytotoxicity mediated by natural killer (NK) cells is impaired in several human diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The precise mechanism(s) by which NK activity is suppressed in patients with SLE is generally unknown. The present study was designed to focus on cellular defects per se in NK cells from patients with SLE. It was observed that the usual enhancing eff...

Sex Hormones and Peripheral White Blood Cell Subsets in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients

Background: Systemic Lupus Eyrythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease charac-terized by antibodies to nuclear antigens, particularly anti-dsDNA. Imbalance between production and destruction of immune cells causes cytopenia. Sex hormones have im-munomodulatory effects; estrogen increases the production of autoantibodies in SLE prone NZB/NZW mice. Objective: To investigate the relationship bet...
