NATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF HURRICANE-INDUCED COASTAL EROSION HAZARDS IN PUERTO RICO

Storms are one of the main causes coastal erosion, causing substantial property and infrastructure losses in communities. Coastal erosion is particularly damaging underrepresented communities that unable to meet building zoning regulations due limited resources [Lam, 2014]. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has developed a probabilistic assessment hurricane-induced for sandy coastlines along eastern Gulf Mexico. However, current USGS product incorporates an empirical equation with inputs beach slope deep-water wave height period [Stockdon, 2006] predict runup. Though this appropriate open coast beaches, it not valid rocky reef lined coasts Puerto Rico their complex bathymetries, steep slopes, large bottom roughness. To expand tool Rico, created 1-dimensional XBeach [Roelvink, 2009] models around island.
