National archives, national memory? How national archives describe themselves and their mission

Abstract There is a widespread notion that archives, especially national archival institutions, represent the nation’s memory. Historically, archives have played an important role for history writing, thereby contributing to construction of master narratives and strengthening identities. What association between memory actually means however debated in literature. Taking discussion on relation as starting point, this study examines how today’s world present themselves public. The source material consists mission statements collected from 138 webpages 18 Facebook accounts all over world. first research question concerns connection narrative, second asks where references identity are most pronounced, third whether self-images can be connected historical experiences. analysis shows contain many allusions heritage, while less than expected. Some variations continents, different groups countries identified, although relatively small. A possible explanation engaged quite lot international cooperation, instance International Council Archives UNESCO. Thus, they likely much influenced by each other political environment their own countries.
