Sub-fs electron pulses for ultrafast electron diffraction

We present a new concept for an electron gun generating subrelativistic electron pulses with a duration down to the attosecond range. It is based on a cylindrical RF cavity (a so-called pill-box cavity) oscillating in its TM010 eigenmode with a photocathode triggered by a fs-laser pulse. Injecting electrons at an appropriate phase of the RF cycle compensates for their initial velocities and tim...

Beyond vibrationally mediated electron transfer: interfacial charge injection on a sub-10-fs time scale

The electron transfer (ET) from organic dye molecules to semiconductor-colloidal systems is characterized by a special energetic situation with a charge transfer reaction from a system of discrete donor levels to a continuum of acceptor states. If these systems show a strong electronic coupling they are amongst the fastest known ET systems with transfer times of less than 10 fs. In the first pa...

Direct Measurement of Sub-10 fs Relativistic Electron Beams with Ultralow Emittance.

Ultralow emittance (≤20  nm, normalized) electron beams with 10^{5} electrons per bunch are obtained by tightly focusing an ultrafast (∼100  fs) laser pulse on the cathode of a 1.6 cell radio frequency photoinjector. Taking advantage of the small initial longitudinal emittance, a downstream velocity bunching cavity is used to compress the beam to <10  fs rms bunch length. The measurement is per...

Sub-10-fs mirror-dispersion-controlled Ti:sapphire laser.

We demonstrate the generation of nearly bandwidth-limited 8-fs optical pulses near 0.8 microm from a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser oscillator, using chirped dielectric mirrors for dispersion control. The mode-locking performance is described, and limitations are discussed.

Noise Characterization of Sub-10-fs Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

A complete noise characterization of sub-10-fs Ti:sapphire oscillators in terms of pulse energy fluctuations, timing jitter, and the coupling between these two noise components is presented for the first time. The noise performance of a self-mode-locked mirror-dispersion-controlled (MDC) oscillator pumped by an Ar–ion laser and, alternatively, a diodepumped laser (Millennia, Spectra Physics Inc...
