Cardiac Sarcoidosis or Giant Cell Myocarditis? On Treatment Improvement of Fulminant Myocarditis as Demonstrated by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Giant cell myocarditis, but not cardiac sarcoidosis, is known to cause fulminant myocarditis resulting in severe heart failure. However, giant cell myocarditis and cardiac sarcoidosis are pathologically similar, and attempts at pathological differentiation between the two remain difficult. We are presenting a case of fulminant myocarditis that has pathological features suggestive of cardiac sar...
متن کاملGiant Cell Myocarditis
One of the possible causes of dilated cardiomyopathy is considered to be a sequel to myocarditis. Two mechanisms have been proposed in the process of progression of myocarditis into dilated cardiomyopathy: one is a persistent viral infection, and the other is an autoimmune myocardial injury. To clarify the possible part played by the autoimmune mechanism in the process, using an animal model, w...
متن کاملImproved diagnosis of idiopathic giant cell myocarditis and cardiac sarcoidosis by myocardial gene expression profiling.
AIMS Improvement of clinical diagnostics of idiopathic giant cell myocarditis (IGCM) and cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), two frequently fatal human myocardial diseases. Currently, IGCM and CS are diagnosed based on differential patterns of inflammatory cell infiltration and non-caseating granulomas in histological sections of endomyocardial biopsies (EMBs), after heart explantation or postmortem. We ...
متن کاملGiant Cell Versus Lymphocytic Myocarditis
Background. Giant cell myocarditis has rarely been diagnosed premortem, and little is known about its natural history. In addition, no comparative studies with lymphocytic myocarditis exist. Methods and Results. The clinical features, serial change in left ventricular fraction (LVEF), and outcomes of all patients with histologically verified myocarditis were retrospectively evaluated. Ten patie...
متن کاملGiant cell myocarditis depicted by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.
Giant cell myocarditis is a rare condition, the cardiac magnetic resonance imaging findings of which have not been previously described. The disease usually occurs in young previously healthy people and is typified by rapidly progressive cardiac dysfunction, often requiring cardiac transplantation. A case of giant cell myocarditis is presented, with associated pathologic and imaging findings.
