Bence Jones proteinuria in multiple sclerosis.
We report our findings of Bence Jones proteins (monoclonal free light chains of immunoglobulins) in concentrated urines of patients with multiple sclerosis, by using agarose electrophoresis and immunofixation. The lack of such findings in urines from healthy subjects and patients with other neurological disorders should stimulate further investigation.

Bence-Jones proteinuria refers to urinary excretion of monoclonal light chains. It results from exclusive production of one light chain, or the unbalanced synthesis of heavy and light chains, with the latter being in excess. Free Kor A-light chains are therefore excreted alone or in addition to complete immunoglobulin molecules carrying the same light chain type. Free light chains are low molec...
متن کاملThe outcome of idiopathic Bence Jones proteinuria.
The authors studied two patients with idiopathic Bence Jones proteinuria (BJP) that fulfill all the criteria proposed by Kyle and Greipp. None had evidence of overt multiple myeloma, of its variants, of primary systemic amyloidosis, or of other lymphoid tumors. In a patient with kappa type idiopathic BJP an elevation of a labelling index was found when an evolving myeloma developed 2 years late...
متن کاملTendon tethering in the carpal tunnel due to amyloidosis in Bence-Jones myelomatosis.
Amyloidosis is a condition in which “waxy eosinophilic” deposits are laid down in the tissues (Virchow 1853, reported by Glenner l980a). These deposits cannot be removed by physiological processes and may accumulate to cause compression syndromes by replacement of normal tissue. Amyloidosis can occur primarily in the systemic hereditary amyloidoses (Massey 1980) but it is more commonly secondar...
متن کاملMetabolism of Bence Jones Proteins.
Bence Jones proteins are molecules of about 40,000 mol wt present in the urine of many patients with plasma cell malignancy. These microglobulins, which are synthesized in plasma-cell tumors (1, 2), share many immunochemical and physicochemical features with the larger 6.6 S y-globulins. That Bence Jones proteins are similar to or identical with components of the larger y-globulins has been sug...
