Myanmar’s Coup d’état and the Struggle for Federal Democracy and Inclusive Government

This article reviews the first twelve months of civil disobedience movement in Myanmar following 1 February 2021 coup d’état and its many dynamics manifestations. Myanmar’s ‘Spring Revolution’ generated a shared sense national unity—overcoming gender, ethnic, religious class boundaries, but raising questions about long-term sustainability nonviolent resistance state where military has for decades wielded political economic power. Since coup, been turmoil, paralysed by instability which escalated after military’s deadly crackdown on pro-democracy activists. The charts growth Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), multiple methods strategic non-cooperation, radicalisation agenda. It analyses formation Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), creation interim National Unity Government (NUG), founding Consultative Council (NUCC) inauguration People’s Defence Force (PDF). examines implications when crisis reached more complex phase open use force terror broader civilian population prompted NUG to declare war junta, urge ethnic armed organisations (EAOs) newly formed anti-junta militias (PDF) attack State Administration (SAC) as terrorist organisation. now opposes junta peaceful resistance, international diplomacy. paper considers whether predominantly movement’s struggle federal democracy inclusive governance is laying foundations eventual transition fully democratic future or cycles violence will continue continues control power using intimidation fear. notes that destroyed economy expanded human rights humanitarian crises also provided opportunity people explore diverse visions free, federal, accountable Myanmar. finally possibilities nation building, reconciliation, healing trauma war.
