Multisatellite Imaging of a Gas Well Blowout Enables Quantification of Total Methane Emissions

نویسندگان

چکیده

Incidents involving loss of control oil/gas wells can result in large but variable emissions whose impact on the global methane budget is currently unknown. On November 1, 2019, a gas well blowout was reported Eagle Ford Shale. By combining satellite observations at different spatial and temporal scales, we quantified 10 times during 20-day event. Our multisatellite synthesis captures both short-term dynamics total integrated blowout. Such detailed event characterization previously not possible from space difficult to do with surface measurements. We present 30-m carbon dioxide plumes PRISMA satellite, which let us estimate flare combustion efficiency (87%). Integrating across all satellites, 4,800 ± 980 metric tons lost methane. Blowouts occur globe help determine their pervasiveness, enable corrective action, quantify contribution budgets.

Toward a better understanding and quantification of methane emissions from shale gas development.

The identification and quantification of methane emissions from natural gas production has become increasingly important owing to the increase in the natural gas component of the energy sector. An instrumented aircraft platform was used to identify large sources of methane and quantify emission rates in southwestern PA in June 2012. A large regional flux, 2.0-14 g CH4 s(-1) km(-2), was quantifi...

Impact of an historic underground gas well blowout on the current methane chemistry in a shallow groundwater system

Blowouts present a small but genuine risk when drilling into the deep subsurface and can have an immediate and significant impact on the surrounding environment. Nevertheless, studies that document their long-term impact are scarce. In 1965, a catastrophic underground blowout occurred during the drilling of a gas well in The Netherlands, which led to the uncontrolled release of large amounts of...

Estimate of methane emissions from the U.S. natural gas industry.

Global methane emissions from the fossil fuel industries have been poorly quantified and, in many cases, emissions are not well-known even at the country level. Historically, methane emissions from the U.S. gas industry have been based on sparse data, incorrect assumptions, or both. As a result, the estimate of the contribution these emissions make to the global methane inventory could be inacc...

Reconciling divergent estimates of oil and gas methane emissions.

Published estimates of methane emissions from atmospheric data (top-down approaches) exceed those from source-based inventories (bottom-up approaches), leading to conflicting claims about the climate implications of fuel switching from coal or petroleum to natural gas. Based on data from a coordinated campaign in the Barnett Shale oil and gas-producing region of Texas, we find that top-down and...
