چکیده
Australia and New Guinea (together referred to as Sahul) were linked by land for much of the late Tertiary share many biotic elements. However, is dominated rainforest, northern savannah. Resolving patterns interchange between these two regions critical understanding expansion contraction both habitat types. The green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) has a vast range across eastern Guinea. An assessment mitochondrial morphological diversity in this nominal taxon reveals taxa. True Litoria caerulea occurs disjunct savannahs Trans-Fly, Central Province Australia, with very low genetic divergence, implying Pleistocene connectivity. A previously unrecognised endemic widespread lowland swampy rainforest. Date estimates divergence new species suggest Pliocene connectivity tropical habitats In contrast, shows shallow phylogeographic structuring central mountains Guinea, recent dispersal southern lowlands. These results emphasise that extent rainforest savannah environments have undergone profound shifts since Pliocene. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:A577A415-0B71-4663-B4C1-7271B97298CD

Malaria acquired in the Torres Strait.
Two cases of Plasmodium vivax malaria acquired in the Torres Strait during 1997 are reported. The source of infection could not be firmly established but two possibilities are discussed. Anopheline mosquitoes are present in the Torres Strait, and malaria is frequently imported from Papua New Guinea (PNG), thus transmission by local mosquitoes poses an ongoing threat. However, in this particular...

The health status of Australia's indigenous people remains the worst of any subgroup within the population, and there is little evidence of any significant improvement over the past two decades, a situation unprecedented on a world scale. Compared with non-indigenous Australians, adult life expectancy is reduced by 15-20 years, with twice the rates of mortality from heart disease, 17 times the ...
متن کاملMelioidosis in the Torres Strait islands of far North Queensland.
During the six-year period from 1995 to 2000, 23 cases of melioidosis were diagnosed from the Torres Strait islands that lie between northern Queensland and Papua New Guinea. This represents an average annual incidence of 42.7 per 100,000 population, the highest documented to date in this region. This probably reflects the extremely high prevalence of diabetes, the high seasonal rainfall in the...

The patient had been to Papua New Guinea during the incubation period and had presumably acquired the infection there3. The patient had been viraemic for about a week after the onset of symptoms in late October. In early December an acute illness, characterised by fever, headache, prostration, backache and diarrhoea began to affect many of the residents of the island on which the patient lived ...
متن کاملThe tobacco industry and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Perspective hile there has been a redoubling of efforts to reduce smoking rates among Indigenous Australians, Indigenous health researchers have paid almost no attention to the tobacco industry — the " vector " of smoking-related diseases. The exceptions are two reports of the use of Aboriginal images to advertise Winfield cigarettes in Europe. 1,2 We decided to examine industry documents to lo...
