چکیده
Alvinocaridid shrimp occurring in dense assemblages close to vigorously venting orifices are characteristic of many vent fields on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Central Indian and Mid-Cayman Rise. Episymbiotic bacteria these exposed fluids enriched inorganic nutrients (carbon dioxide, sulfide) that, together with dissolved oxygen surrounding seawater, sustain autotrophic growth supply nourishment shrimp. Enigmatically, conspecific may also be found sparsely distributed periphery a field, where there is little visual evidence fluid flux. We tested null hypothesis that sources were identical for central (dense) peripheral assemblages, using gut content stable isotope analyses. Rimicaris hybisae sampled from at Von Damm Vent Field (Mid-Cayman Rise). Guts centrally aggregated contained white material inferred bacteria, while individuals this and/or pieces crustacean exoskeletons. Subseafloor microbial communities in hydrogen‐rich vent fluids from hydrothermal systems along the Mid‐Cayman Rise
Warm fluids emanating from hydrothermal vents can be used as windows into the rocky subseafloor habitat and its resident microbial community. Two new vent systems on the Mid-Cayman Rise each exhibits novel geologic settings and distinctively hydrogen-rich vent fluid compositions. We have determined and compared the chemistry, potential energy yielding reactions, abundance, community composition...

The dynamics and microdistribution of faunal assemblages at hydrothermal vents often reflect the fine-scale spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the vent environment. This study examined the reproductive development and population structure of the caridean shrimp Rimicaris hybisae at the Beebe and Von Damm Vent Fields (Mid-Cayman Spreading Centre, Caribbean) using spatially discrete samples co...
متن کاملPathways of Carbon and Energy Metabolism of the Epibiotic Community Associated with the Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Shrimp Rimicaris exoculata
BACKGROUND The shrimp Rimicaris exoculata dominates the faunal biomass at many deep-sea hydrothermal vent sites at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In its enlarged gill chamber it harbors a specialized epibiotic bacterial community for which a nutritional role has been proposed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We analyzed specimens from the Snake Pit hydrothermal vent field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge by...
متن کاملHydrothermal vent fields and chemosynthetic biota on the world's deepest seafloor spreading centre
The Mid-Cayman spreading centre is an ultraslow-spreading ridge in the Caribbean Sea. Its extreme depth and geographic isolation from other mid-ocean ridges offer insights into the effects of pressure on hydrothermal venting, and the biogeography of vent fauna. Here we report the discovery of two hydrothermal vent fields on the Mid-Cayman spreading centre. The Von Damm Vent Field is located on ...
