Multilocus sequence typing and evolutionary relationships among the causative agents of melioidosis and glanders, Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei.

A collection of 147 isolates of Burkholderia pseudomallei, B. mallei, and B. thailandensis was characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The 128 isolates of B. pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, were obtained from diverse geographic locations, from humans and animals with disease, and from the environment and were resolved into 71 sequence types. The utility of the MLST...

Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei: Melioidosis and Glanders

The genus Burkholderia is currently composed of many species, but only three are notable pathogens for humans or animals: the former cepacia complex (described in Chapter 220) pseudomallei (the agent of melioidosis), and mallei (the agent of equine glanders). All three are aerobic, nonsporulating, straight or slightly curved gram-negative bacilli that were formerly placed in the genus Pseudomonas.

Genomic plasticity of the causative agent of melioidosis, Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a recognized biothreat agent and the causative agent of melioidosis. This Gram-negative bacterium exists as a soil saprophyte in melioidosis-endemic areas of the world and accounts for 20% of community-acquired septicaemias in northeastern Thailand where half of those affected die. Here we report the complete genome of B. pseudomallei, which is composed of two chrom...

Development of Burkholderia mallei and pseudomallei vaccines

Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei are Gram-negative bacteria that cause glanders and melioidosis, respectively. Inhalational infection with either organism can result in severe and rapidly fatal pneumonia. Inoculation by the oral and cutaneous routes can also produce infection. Chronic infection may develop after recovery from acute infection with both agents, and control of inf...

Antibiosis of Burkholderia ubonensis againist Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent for melioidosis.

Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is an enigmatic infectious disease that afflicts individuals in many tropical and developing regions. Treatment is hampered by the organism's innate antibiotic resistance and the disease's non-pathognomic presentation. Recently, added attention has been given to this organism due to its classification as a potential biowarfare agent. Therefore, ...
