Multifunctionality of temperate alley-cropping agroforestry outperforms open cropland and grassland

چکیده
Abstract Intensively managed open croplands are highly productive but often have deleterious environmental impacts. Temperate agroforestry potentially improves ecosystem functions, although comprehensive analysis is lacking. Here, we measured primary data on 47 indicators of seven functions in and 16 four grasslands to assess how alley-cropping performs compared cropland grassland. Carbon sequestration, habitat for soil biological activity, wind erosion resistance improved ( P ≤ 0.03) whereas only carbon sequestration grassland < 0.01). In agroforestry, nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas abatement, water regulation did not improve, due customary high fertilization rates. Alley-cropping increased multifunctionality, croplands. To ameliorate the benefits more efficient use nutrients required. Financial incentives should focus conversion incorporate fertilizer management.

Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Fractions in Temperate Alley Cropping Systems
Alley cropping may promote greater sequestration of soil organic carbon. The objective of this study was to examine spatial variability of soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) fractions relative to tree rows in established alley cropping systems in north central Missouri. Soils were collected to a depth of 30 cm from two alley cropped sites, a 19-yr-old pecan (Carya illinoinensis)/bluegrass...
متن کاملLocally rare species influence grassland ecosystem multifunctionality.
Species diversity promotes the delivery of multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality). However, the relative functional importance of rare and common species in driving the biodiversity-multifunctionality relationship remains unknown. We studied the relationship between the diversity of rare and common species (according to their local abundances and across nine different trophic groups)...
متن کاملPotentials for Shade Management in Agroforestry Systems for Taro Cropping
This paper discusses the potential benefits from shade management in agroforestry systems for taro cropping. Trial work to evaluate weed growth, taro production, and cultivar responses to shade levels are reviewed. It is concluded that weed growth can be reduced in tree-shaded plots without reducing corm production. Higher crop biomass is obtained when taro is grown under fifty percent shade co...
متن کاملLand Use Patterns and the Scale of Adoption of Agroforestry in the Rural Landscapes of Padma Floodplain in Bangladesh
This research was conducted in six typical villages of Northern Bangladesh. A sample of 170 farmers was selected. Research indicates that the farmers practising agroforestry own small farms and the income of agroforestry helps them to reduce their poverty, maintain their socio-economic needs and sustain their livelihoods. Agroforestry is not a new concept in the study area. The people have been...
متن کاملInteractions among leguminous trees, crops and weeds in a no-till alley cropping system
Trees improve the soil quality and their rapid growth in the tropics make agroforestry systems potentially effective for establishing low-input agricultural systems in this region. This study assessed the effects of the biophysical interactions among leguminous trees, weeds, cotton and maize in an alley cropping system. The experiment comprised six treatments: Clitoria + Gliricidia; Acacia ...
