Multi‐country outbreak of multiple Salmonella enterica serotypes linked to imported sesame‐based products

Since January 2019, 121 cases of Salmonella enterica infections with six different serotypes linked to sesame-based products have been reported in five EU/EEA countries. The are S. Amsterdam, Havana, Kintambo, Mbandaka, Orion, and Senftenberg. Case interviews four countries revealed consumption (halva or tahini) prior illness. Almost half the children ≤10 years, who also represent over hospitalised cases. No deaths reported. November 14 batches originating from Syria, tested positive for one multiple outbreak strains (twelve Brand A, two C). Based on available epidemiological, microbiological, traceability information, probable vehicles infection imported at least involved batches. These sealed ready be consumed, suggesting that contamination occurred before reached European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) market. intermittent occurrence human identification food samples since 2019 indicate availability contaminated market years.
