Mountain ungulate mating systems: patterns and processes

چکیده
Mountain ungulates of the subfamily Caprinae, including wild sheep, goats and goat-antelopes, show remarkable interspecific diversity in habitat preferences, social organisation morphological features. We review how this relates to their mating behaviour. After introducing ecology systems evolution we investigate pairwise, sequential relationships between behaviour, level polygyny, features, discuss ecological processes underlying patterns mate monopolisation acquisition. From forest-dwelling, solitary, monogamous monomorphic highly dimorphic, polygynous sheep inhabiting open landscapes, mountain reveal a close relationship openness sexual dimorphism, through sociality that monopolisation. Although over last few decades some information has been collected on biology our understanding determinants is still hampered by limited data estimate opportunities for selection, as well uncertainties occurrence maintenance alternative reproductive tactics, lack female choice. The study factors influencing them play key role from an evolutionary conservation standpoint. Structured mating: Patterns and implications
Genetic similarity of spouses can reflect factors influencing mate choice, such as physical/behavioral characteristics, and patterns of social endogamy. Spouse correlations for both genetic ancestry and measured traits may impact genotype distributions (Hardy Weinberg and linkage equilibrium), and therefore genetic association studies. Here we evaluate white spouse-pairs from the Framingham Hea...

متن کاملArsenic in groundwaters in the Northern Appalachian Mountain belt: a review of patterns and processes.
Naturally occurring arsenic in the bedrock of the Northern Appalachian Mountain belt was first recognized in the late 19th century. The knowledge of the behavior of arsenic in groundwater in this region has lagged behind nearly a century, with the popular press reporting on local studies in the early 1980s, and most peer-reviewed research articles on regional patterns conducted and written in t...
متن کاملLinking seasonal home range size with habitat selection and movement in a mountain ungulate
Background Space use by animals is determined by the interplay between movement and the environment, and is thus mediated by habitat selection, biotic interactions and intrinsic factors of moving individuals. These processes ultimately determine home range size, but their relative contributions and dynamic nature remain less explored. We investigated the role of habitat selection, movement unre...
متن کاملEvaluating prey switching in wolf-ungulate systems.
Wolf restoration has become a widely accepted conservation and management practice throughout North America and Europe, though the ecosystem effects of returning top carnivores remain both scientific and societal controversies. Mathematical models predicting and describing wolf-ungulate interactions are typically limited to the wolves' primary prey, with the potential for prey switching in wolf...
