Motives for Cooperation in the One-Shot Prisoner’s Dilemma

چکیده
We investigate the motives for cooperation in one-shot Prisoner’s Dilemma (PD). A prior study finds that rates PD games can be ranked empirically by social surplus from cooperation. That employs symmetric payoffs simultaneous games. Hence, setting, it is not possible to discern since three prominent welfare criteria, (efficiency) preferences, Rawlsian maximin and inequity aversion make same predictions. In present paper, we conduct an experiment identify which of these preferences best explains differences effects risk non-cooperation.

Correlates of Cooperation in a One-Shot High-Stakes Televised Prisoners' Dilemma
Explaining cooperation between non-relatives is a puzzle for both evolutionary biology and the social sciences. In humans, cooperation is often studied in a laboratory setting using economic games such as the prisoners' dilemma. However, such experiments are sometimes criticized for being played for low stakes and by misrepresentative student samples. Golden balls is a televised game show that ...
متن کاملFoundations for Cooperation in the Prisoners ’ Dilemma
We provide axiomatic foundations for a simple model of play in prisoners’ dilemma games. The model accommodates cooperation and suggests that players behave as if their expectations about their opponents’ behavior vary with their own choice. We refer to this nonstandard updating as magical thinking. The degree to which players exhibit magical thinking may be heterogeneous in the population and ...
متن کاملA One-Shot Prisoners' Dilemma with Procedural Utility
This article introduces a model of rationality that combines procedural utility over actions with consequential utility over payo¤s. It applies the model to the Prisoners’ Dilemma and shows that empirically observed cooperative behaviors can be rationally explained by a procedural utility for cooperation. The model characterizes the situations in which cooperation emerges as a Nash equilibrium....
متن کاملSupplement to Foundations for Cooperation in the Prisoners ’ Dilemma
We establish that in the Prisoners’ Dilemma, the model of Daley and Sadowski (2014) is logically distinct from three models that employ well-known forms of otherregarding preferences: altruism (Ledyard, 1995; Levine, 1998), inequity aversion (Fehr and Schmidt, 1999), and reciprocity (Rabin, 1993). متن کاملTestosterone, facial symmetry and cooperation in the prisoners' dilemma.
Recent research has analyzed how individual characteristics, like the exposure to different hormones and symmetry, affect decision-making and strategic behaviour. The present article investigates the effect of symmetry, of exposure to testosterone (T) in utero and during puberty and of current T on cooperation in a Prisoners' Dilemma Game (PDG). T is a hormone with well known effect on males' b...
