Motivated reasoning refers to the idea that people hold certain beliefs about themselves or world due their desire do so, rather than striving for accuracy. This type of belief formation can lead overconfidence and polarization, as well facilitate immoral behavior at both individual collective levels. Summarizing theoretical empirical work, highlight key results has produced. We also discuss open questions potentially exciting avenues future research in area.

Remaking memories: reconsolidation updates positively motivated spatial memory in rats.
There is strong evidence that reactivation of a memory returns it to a labile state, initiating a restabilization process termed reconsolidation, which allows for updating of the memory. In this study we investigated reactivation-dependent updating using a new positively motivated spatial task in rodents that was designed specifically to model a human list-learning paradigm. On Day 1, rats were...

متن کاملCognitively Motivated Episodic Memory for a Virtual Guide
This paper describes how the guiding capabilities of a virtual agent with a belief – desire – intention cognitive architecture can be enhanced by adding an episodic memory. We describe how the theories of episodic memory and event segmentation can be applied to the architecture of our virtual agent Max, and how to create an index according to the event indexing model. Having memories of past ex...
