Morphology of echovirus 22.
Purified preparations of echovirus 22 were examined in the electron microscope. The virus was found to possess 32 capsomers arranged at the vertices of either a pentakis dodecahedron or a rhombic triacontahedron. The size of the virions ranges from 22 x 10(-3) to 32 x 10(-3) mum with a mean of 27 x 10(-3) mum and a mode of 28 x 10(-3) mum.

To find out whether the appearance and pathogenicity of infections caused by echovirus 22 (EV22)--which has considerably different molecular characteristics from those of typical enteroviruses--exhibit extraordinary features, novel diagnostic approaches were applied. Staining of inoculated cell cultures with specific antibodies was followed by immunoperoxidase detection. Of fecal specimens from...
متن کاملMolecular and biological characteristics of echovirus 22, a representative of a new picornavirus group.
Recent sequence analysis revealed that the human pathogen echovirus 22 (EV22) is genetically distant from all the other picornaviruses studied to date (T. Hyypiä, C. Horsnell, M. Maaronen, M. Khan, N. Kalkkinen, P. Auvinen, L. Kinnunen, and G. Stanway, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89:8847-8851, 1992). We have further characterized the biological properties of the virus and show here that the viri...

Echovirus 1 (EV1) is a human pathogen which belongs to the Picornaviridae family of RNA viruses. We have analyzed the early events of infection after EV1 binding to its receptor alpha 2 beta 1 integrin and elucidated the route by which EV1 gains access to the host cell. EV1 binding onto the cell surface and subsequent entry resulted in conformational changes of the viral capsid as demonstrated ...
