Morphological Response of Channelized, Sinuous Gravel?Bed Rivers to Sediment Replenishment

چکیده

Anthropogenic alterations of sediment supply and transport processes may impact the ecological state riverscapes threaten infrastructure along river. Sediment replenishment is one restoration method that employed in channels impacted by deficit. We performed flume experiments to investigate channel bed response a channelized, sinuous gravel-bed river periodic episodic replenishment. The grain size distribution replenished material, flow discharge, level were varied long-term steady-state experiments. In addition, routing single pulse was investigated. included intensified relocation transversal leveling. discharge thereby exerted strongest control over response, whereas influence material minor. A simple habitat analysis using grayling as example species revealed retained within thus providing episodically renewed clean gravel patches increase spawning availability. However, general shortage shallow habitats for fry juveniles channelized rivers persisted regardless Overall, illustrate provide valuable Accompanying measures such widening careful consideration other remaining stressors are strongly recommended benefits further.

Sinuous rivers.

The windings of rivers have long fascinated their human observers. For example, Aboriginal legend explains the sinuous pattern of the modern Finke River (Fig. 1) as the creation of the immense and powerful Rainbow Serpent as he emerged during the Dreamtime from deep waterholes. Recently in PNAS (1), a new theory for the general origin of such sinuous flow patterns was published, which follows f...

Sluicing Flumes for Gauging Sediment-Laden Rivers

The sluicing flume that was designed is less capable of silting up and losing its calibration than its counterparts of standard sharp-crested compound weir design. The laboratory work described here led to a refinement in the design in the form of a short flume set into the lowest section of a compound Crump weir gauging installation. Critical flow occurs near the exit of this flume, and it is ...

Sediment supply controls equilibrium channel geometry in gravel rivers.

In many gravel-bedded rivers, floods that fill the channel banks create just enough shear stress to move the median-sized gravel particles on the bed surface (D50). Because this observation is common and is supported by theory, the coincidence of bankfull flow and the incipient motion of D50 has become a commonly used assumption. However, not all natural gravel channels actually conform to this...

23 Sediment Transport and Deposition in Mountain Rivers

In many ways, sediment transport dynamics in mountain environments differ from those of the lowlands. The high relief and the steep slopes are an obvious feature of mountain areas. The cold climate is another factor controlling runoff and erosional processes, and the distribution of vegetation is also controlled by the prevailing climate. Above the tree line, processes of erosion are more inten...

Persistent pollutants urban rivers sediment survey: implications for pollution control.

The impacts of diffuse urban sources of pollution on watercourses are quantified. A survey of nine urban streams in Scotland for persistent pollutants in stream sediments is described, together with sediments from SUDS ponds. Determinands reported are: PAHs, total hydrocarbons, and toxic metals (As, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd). Results highlight hydrocarbons as a major urban pollutant, and show sig...
