Morphodynamic Preservation of Fluvial Channel Belts

نویسندگان

چکیده

The fluvial sedimentary record is largely composed of deposits from relatively common flow events, rather than more catastrophic scour-and-fill events. At the scales bedforms, such are preserved within stratigraphic because they rapidly accumulate within, and protected by, morphodynamic topographic depressions that occur naturally in system as a result feedbacks between flow, sediment transport, topography. Examples include preservation ripples front dunes, dunes bars, bars channels. Here, we used 3D seismic data images channel belts to test hypothesis alluvial-ridge basins, formed raised beds due decreasing sedimentation rates away channels alluvial settings, source topography driving channel-belt-scale preservation. Using data, measured positions belts, well their lengths, widths, sinuosities, centerline orientations dataset. Results consistent with well-preserved steered by alluvial-ridge-basin Further, thickness channel-belt interval exceeds relief any one basin, suggesting volume records filling multiple basins process common. Characterizing signature necessary for understanding contrasting architectures where external forcings prevented formation.

Applicability of a coastal morphodynamic model for fluvial environments

The dominant processes of sediment transport and morphological changes are different between rivers and coastal areas. In many situations rivers, estuaries and coasts need to be modelled together in an integrated way. This paper investigates the capability of a freely available, open source, coastal morphodynamic software (XBeach) to estimate sediment transport and morphological changes in fluv...

Morphodynamic models of communication

Morphodynamics means 'the dynamics of form', and the purpose of morphody-namic theories is to describe and explain the birth, evolution, and death of form. The term 'form' is used differently in different sciences, but the notions of discontinuity and organisation seems to recur in most uses. A central question is: how can continuous changes of an amorphous substance, such as increasing the vel...

Fluvial fan deltas: Linking channel processes with large-scale morphodynamics

[1] Alluvial fan deltas are built by aggrading and avulsing river channels. A numerical model of flow and sediment transport in channels is combined with a condition for channel avulsion to describe evolution of the fan surface. The model combines elements of two recent approaches: (1) diffusional models of depositional basin filling, which describe the evolution of overall morphology, and (2) ...

Fluvial and Marginal Marine Architecture of the John Henry Member, Straight Cliffs Formation, Kelly Grade of the Kaiparowits Plateau, South-central Utah

Understanding how changes in fluvial and marginal marine architecture correlate with shifts in marine shoreface architecture is a crucial step to understanding the effect of relative sea level changes on terrestrial sedimentary systems. Three measured sections (each >230 m), 2367 paleocurrent measurements, and examinations of lateral facies relationships were made over 3 km of continuous outcro...

Morphodynamic modeling of erodible laminar channels.

A two-dimensional model for the erosion generated by viscous free-surface flows, based on the shallow-water equations and the lubrication approximation, is presented. It has a family of self-similar solutions for straight erodible channels, with an aspect ratio that increases in time. It is also shown, through a simplified stability analysis, that a laminar river can generate various bar instab...
