More than “Fake News”?

Abstract While the debate around prevalence and potential effects of fake news has received considerable scholarly attention, less research focused on how political elites pundits weaponized to delegitimize media. In this study, we examine rhetoric in 2020 U.S. presidential primary candidates Facebook advertisements. Our analysis suggests that Republican Democratic alike attack demean media several themes, including castigating them for malicious gatekeeping, being out touch with views public, a bully. Only Trump routinely attacks trafficking falsehoods colluding other interests his candidacy. findings highlight ways instrumentalize their own rhetorical purposes; further constructing as harmful democracy.
