Mora-timed, stress-timed, and syllable-timed rhythm classes: Clues in English speech production by bilingual speakers

چکیده
Abstract A growing body of literature suggests that the world's languages can be classified into three rhythm classes: mora-timed languages, stress-timed and syllable-timed languages. However, scholars cannot agree on which rhythmic measures discriminate classes most satisfactorily whether speech rate factor should considered. In this study, we analyze production by bilingual speakers, compare their with monolingual speakers ESL speakers. Our metric measure results show when is taken consideration, a combination two for vowels, Varco?V vocalic nPVI , reliable in discriminating different classes, while consonants do not seem effective, included or not.

Durational Variability in Speech and the Rhythm Class Hypothesis
In this paper, we provide evidence for rhythmic classifications of speech from duration measurements. Our investigation differs from previous studies in two ways. Firstly, we do not relate speech rhythm to phonological units such as interstress intervals or syllable durations. Instead, we calculate durational variability in successive acoustic-phonetic intervals using Pairwise Variability Indic...
متن کاملPhrase-final lengthening and stress-timed shortening in the speech of native speakers and Japanese learners of English
This study is intended to describe and analyze the durational patterns of native Japanese speakers learning English, with a focus on two major prosodic effects: phrase-final lengthening and stresstimed shortening. To investigate the relative contribution of these effects, a production experiment was conducted, adapting the methodological framework of Beckman and Edwards (1990). The effects of t...
متن کاملAn analysis of the distribution of syllables in prosodic phrases of stress-timed and syllable-timed languages
This paper presents an analysis of syllable rhythm in different types of languages, namely syllable-timed and stress-timed. Four Indian languages that are syllable-timed and American English and Scottish English, that are stress-timed are used for the study. This analysis attempts to bring the similarity or differences between the two types of languages in terms of syllable rhythm at the level ...
متن کاملItalian in the No-Man's Land Between Stress-Timing and Syllable-Timing? Speakers are More Stress-Timed than Listeners
How syllable-timed is Italian? We investigate two contexts for vowel reduction, unstressed syllables and syllables in polysyllabic words. In a production experiment, a large sample of speakers from Tuscany read diand trisyllabic target words with different stress placement in a sentence context. Results showed vowel reduction in unstressed syllables, both in terms of duration and spectral quali...
متن کاملKorean speech rhythm using rhythmic measures
This paper investigates speech rhythm in standard Seoul Korean using recently developed durational rhythmic measures. Traditionally, languages are classified into 'stress-timed' and 'syllable-timed' (Abercrombie, 1967), with English and German being typical stress-timed languages, French and Italian typical syllable-timed languages. Later works suggested a third category of mora-timed languages...
