Monetary Incentives and Knowledge Spillover: Evidence from a Natural Experiment

چکیده
We examine how the introduction of monetary incentives by a knowledge-sharing platform affects nonrewarded knowledge activity on platform. Our setting is question-and-answer that provides for holding live talks. Using combination coarsened exact matching and difference-in-differences estimation techniques, we find launch paid feature creates positive spillover effect hosts’ free contributions, specifically, 9.4%–40.8% more answers in short run when compared with nonhosts. The did not result any significant change quality answers. suggest reputation building one plausible mechanism underlying spillover. Additional analyses reveal negative short-lived hosts long run, indicating possible crowding out contributions. long-lived lasts longer but also reduced over time. findings introducing can be viable business model platforms to stimulate user contributions both related unpaid activities. Yet owners should cautious about potential after users stop contributing develop effective strategies maintain users’ long-term interests program. Physicians' multitasking and incentives: empirical evidence from a natural experiment.
We analyse how physicians respond to contractual changes and incentives within a multitasking environment. In 1999 the Quebec government (Canada) introduced an optional mixed compensation (MC) system, combining a fixed per diem with a partial (relative to the traditional fee-for-service (FFS) system) fee for services provided. We combine panel survey and administrative data on Quebec physicians...
متن کاملFavouritism and financial incentives: A natural experiment∗
Principals who exercise favouritism towards certain agents may harm those who are not so favoured. Other papers have produced evidence consistent with the presence of such favouritism but have been unable to consider methods for controlling it. We address this issue in the context of a natural experiment from English soccer, where one particular league introduced professional referees in 2001-0...
متن کاملIncentives and Targets in Hospital Care: Evidence from a Natural Experiment
Performance targets are commonly used in the public sector, despite their well known problems when organisations have multiple objectives and performance is difficult to measure. It is possible that such targets may work where there is considerable consensus that performance needs to be improved. We investigate this possibility by examining the response of the English National Health Service (N...

Sorting, Incentives and Risk Preferences: Evidence from a Field Experiment The, often observed, positive correlation between incentive intensity and risk has been explained in two ways: the presence of transaction costs as determinants of contracts and the sorting of risk-tolerant individuals into firms using high-intensity incentive contracts. The empirical importance of sorting is perhaps bes...

Blood Donations and Incentives: Evidence from a Field Experiment There is a longstanding concern that material incentives might undermine prosocial motivation, leading to a decrease in blood donations rather than an increase. This paper provides an empirical test of how material incentives affect blood donations in a large-scale field experiment spanning three months and involving more than 10,...
