Understanding Animal Group-Size Distributions
One of the most striking aspects of animal groups is their remarkable variation in size, both within and between species. While a number of mechanistic models have been proposed to explain this variation, there are few comprehensive datasets against which these models have been tested. In particular, we only vaguely understand how environmental factors and behavioral activities affect group-siz...
متن کاملSOME RESULTS OF MOMENTS OF UNCERTAIN RANDOM VARIABLES
Chance theory is a mathematical methodology for dealing with indeterminatephenomena including uncertainty and randomness.Consequently, uncertain random variable is developed to describe the phenomena which involveuncertainty and randomness. Thus, uncertain random variable is a fundamental concept in chance theory. This paper provides some practical quantities to describe uncertain random variable...
متن کاملScaling in animal group-size distributions.
An elementary model of animal aggregation is presented. The group-size distributions resulting from this model are truncated power laws. The predictions of the model are found to be consistent with data that describe the group-size distributions of tuna fish, sardinellas, and African buffaloes.
متن کاملOrdered Random Variables from Discontinuous Distributions
In the absolutely continuous case, order statistics, record values and several other models of ordered random variables can be viewed as special cases of generalized order statistics, which enables a unified treatment of their theory. This paper deals with discontinuous generalized order statistics, continuing on the recent work of Tran (2006). Specifically, we show that in general neither re...
متن کاملTruncated moments of parton distributions
We derive evolution equations satisfied by moments of parton distributions when the integration over the Bjorken variable is restricted to a subset (x0 ≤ x ≤ 1) of the allowed kinematical range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. The corresponding anomalous dimensions turn out to be given by a triangular matrix which couples the N–th truncated moment with all (N+K)–th truncated moments with integer K ≥ 0. We show that ...
