Molecular footprint of parasite co-introduction with Nile tilapia in the Congo Basin

چکیده

Nile tilapia, one of the most popular aquaculture species worldwide, has been introduced into Congo Basin several times for purposes. Previous studies based on morphological features showed that some monogenean gill parasites were co-introduced with tilapia and spilled over to native Congolese cichlids. In this study, we genetically investigated monogeneans from three major parts Basin: Upper, Middle Lower Congo. We sequenced 214 specimens belonging 16 Monogenea, collected Congo, Madagascar Burundi. evaluate their position in a phylogeny including 38 total. Our results confirm co-introductions suggest unreported parasite transmission Mweru Upper which was undetectable study alone. Shared COI haplotypes between illustrate how anthropogenic introduction events homogenize communities across large geographical distances thereby disrupt isolation by distance patterns. Contrary our expectation, populations reveal high diversity, probably resulting multiple introductions different geographic origins. Additionally, tested barcoding gap performance mitochondrial nuclear ribosomal ITS-1, 28S 18S markers. found significant 15% COI, but none other molecular Cichlidogyrus halli, C. papernastrema, tiberianus, cirratus zambezensis are need taxonomic revision.

Forest Elephant Crisis in the Congo Basin

Debate over repealing the ivory trade ban dominates conferences of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Resolving this controversy requires accurate estimates of elephant population trends and rates of illegal killing. Most African savannah elephant populations are well known; however, the status of forest elephants, perhaps a distinct spe...

Behaviours Associated with Acoustic Communication in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

BACKGROUND Sound production is widespread among fishes and accompanies many social interactions. The literature reports twenty-nine cichlid species known to produce sounds during aggressive and courtship displays, but the precise range in behavioural contexts is unclear. This study aims to describe the various Oreochromis niloticus behaviours that are associated with sound production in order t...

Haematological changes in Nile tilapia experimentally infected with Enterococcus sp.

This study evaluated the haematological changes in Nile tilapia experimentally infected with 1 x 10(3) and 1 x 10(6) colony-forming units (CFU)/mL of Enterococcus sp. in the swim bladder. The experiment consisted of four treatments in triplicates: non-injected fish (NI); fish injected with 1 mL of sterile saline solution 0.65% (SAL); fish injected with 1 x 10(3) and 1 x 10(6) CFU/mL of Enteroco...
