Molecular biology of aging.
Aging seems to reflect a patterned program of decline in functional reserves and a reduced ability to maintain homeostasis. Advances in molecular biology have provided new insights into the process of aging at the cellular level. In this review, a few selected models of aging that illustrate the molecular methods and techniques used in aging research are discussed.

A significant component of the aging process is genetically determined. Numerous theories of aging exist, many of which postulate the existence of "longevity genes." Recent advances in molecular biological and other techniques have allowed a significantly greater understanding of aging and age-related disease. This will be illustrated by four genetic and sporadic diseases: Alzheimer's disease (...
متن کاملBiomarkers of Aging: From Function to Molecular Biology
Aging is a major risk factor for most chronic diseases and functional impairments. Within a homogeneous age sample there is a considerable variation in the extent of disease and functional impairment risk, revealing a need for valid biomarkers to aid in characterizing the complex aging processes. The identification of biomarkers is further complicated by the diversity of biological living situa...

Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is a neurodegenerative mitochondrial disease characterized by retinal ganglionic cell death and eventual loss of central vision. Specific mtDNA mutations in respiratory complex I subunits (ND4/ND6/ND1) coding genes have been identified in most of LHON patients, and these mutations have been shown to cause mitochondrial dysfunctions leading to increased...
