چکیده

The trophic ecology of Chiloneus weevil species from Sicily was unknown until recently when the host plant these closely related discovered. opportunity to collect many samples elusive allowed us re-evaluate morphology and genetic relationships among three closest four inhabiting adjoining islands. We analysed a fragment cox1 mitochondrial gene adult specimens collected Drimia pancration in Sicily, Pantelleria, Pelagie Islands Malta study population structure different nominal known so far. Both morphological results suggest that previous are actually two with disjunct distribution, for which new synonymy C. hoffmanni (González, 1970) (= solarii Pesarini, 1970, syn. nov.) is established. meridionalis (Boheman, 1840) inhabits main island Pantelleria island, while restricted Adults very similar general appearance but still distinguishable by set well-established characters presented here key their identification. approach provided evidence certain degree variation within would be worth addressing phylogeographic perspective future work.urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:1F03BA05-B7A9-44B7-8225-321174A1E3FB

Three new species of entimine weevils in Early Miocene amber from the Dominican Republic (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

BACKGROUND Using syntactic and semantic conventions of the taxonomic concept approach (Franz et al. 2015), we describe three newly recognized fossil broad-nosed weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae) preserved in Early Miocene amber (ca. 20.4-16.0 mya) from the Dominican Republic: Scelianoma compactasp. n. sec. Franz & Zhang (2017) (henceforth abbreviated as [FZ2017]), Tropirhinus palpe...

Towards a phylogenetic system of derelomine flower weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

A revised phylogenetic classification for derelomine flower weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Curculioninae: Derelomini Lacordaire) is proposed, based on a cladistic analysis of 115 outgroup and ingroup taxa and 155 primarily morphological characters. The single most-parsimonious cladogram (length 1⁄4 271, consistency index 1⁄4 65, retention index 1⁄4 95) indicates that several genera must be...

Pollination of Anthurium (Araceae) by derelomine flower weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Cyclanthura flower weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Derelomini) are identified for the first time as pollinators of multiple species of Anthurium (Araceae) in Costa Rica. The weevils are present on the inflorescences in small numbers during the pistillate and staminate phase of anthesis, and consume plant tissues and pollen. The individuals of one species of Cyclanthura can visit several Ant...

Transoceanic origin of microendemic and flightless New Caledonian weevils

The origin of the astonishing New Caledonian biota continues to fuel a heated debate among advocates of a Gondwanan relict scenario and defenders of late oceanic dispersal. Here, we study the origin of New Caledonian Trigonopterus flightless weevils using a multimarker molecular phylogeny. We infer two independent clades of species found in the archipelago. Our dating estimates suggest a Late M...

Captures of Boll Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Relation to Trap Orientation and Distance From Brush Lines.

Eradication programs for the boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman) rely on pheromone-baited traps to trigger insecticide treatments and monitor program progress. A key objective of monitoring in these programs is the timely detection of incipient weevil populations to limit or prevent re-infestation. Therefore, improvements in the effectiveness of trapping would enhance efforts to ac...
