Modulation of the biosynthesis of oxyprenylated coumarins in calli from Ferulago campestris elicited by ferulic acid

Abstract Previous and recent literature acquisitions suggested that cultured calli are an efficient meaningful model to investigate the extent fate of prenylation phenylpropanoid cores in plants belonging Rutaceae Apiaceae families upon administration putative biosynthetic precursors. To this concern, present manuscript, we investigated effect supplementation ferulic acid umbelliferone on biosynthesis their oxyprenylated counterparts Ferulago campestris (Besser) Grecescu (Fam. Apiaceae) calli. Dried plant biomass material has been extracted by ultrasound-assisted extraction with EtOH. O -prenyl secondary metabolites, namely 3,3-dimethylallyloxy, geranyloxy, farnesyloxy derivatives both umbelliferone, were identified quantified HPLC/DAD analyses. Supplementation was only treatment providing appreciable results. Quite surprisingly, its addition did not affect formation phytochemicals but boosted farnesyloxy-derivative umbrelliprenin. The findings reported herein enforce underline role as elicitor selected classes metabolites apiaceous species, recently observed.
