چکیده

Abstract Climate variabilities can have significant impacts on rainfall in East Africa, leading to disruption natural and human systems affecting the lives of tens millions people. Subseasonal interannual are critical components total variability region. The goal this study is examine combined effects Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO), operating at a subseasonal time scale, El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), an modulation African boreal fall [October–December (OND)] rainfall, commonly called short rains. Composite analysis shows that daily responses depend MJO phase its interaction with ENSO state. In particular, generally stronger under Niño conditions relative neutral La Niña conditions, increased potential for precipitation excesses during wet phases Niño. There evidence both dynamic thermodynamic mechanisms associated these impacts, including increase westerly moisture transport easterly advection temperature moist static energy. Seasonal frequency intensity contribute notably seasonal anomaly. This suggests mediate Niño’s impact OND Africa.

Enso Signals in East African Rainfall Seasons

The evolutions of ENSO modes in the seasonal rainfall patterns over East Africa are examined in this study. The study covers the period 1961–1990. Both rotated empirical orthogonal function (EOF) and simple correlation analyses were used to delineate a network of 136 stations over East Africa into homogeneous rainfall regions in order to derive rainfall indices. Time series generated from the d...

El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO): A Review

The ENSO observing system in the tropical Pacific plays an important role in monitoring ENSO and helping improve the understanding and prediction of ENSO. Occurrence of ENSO has been explained as either a self-sustained and naturally oscillatory mode of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system or a stable mode triggered by stochastic forcing. In either case, ENSO involves the positive ocean-atmosphe...

Effects of the El Niño--Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle on mosquito populations in southern California.

The abundance and species composition of adult mosquitoes collected by carbon dioxide-baited suction traps and gravid traps in western Los Angeles County, CA, were compared before and during a strong El Niño--Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle from December 1996 until November 1999. Following El Niño conditions in the winter 1997-1998, adult host-seeking mosquito abundance during spring was twic...

Combined effects of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and El Niño-Southern Oscillation on Global Land Dry–Wet Changes

The effects of natural variability, especially El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) effects, have been the focus of several recent studies on the change of drought patterns with climate change. The interannual relationship between ENSO and the global climate is not stationary and can be modulated by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). However, the global land distribution of the dry-wet chang...

Bayesian dynamic modeling for monthly Indian summer monsoon rainfall using El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Equatorial Indian Ocean Oscillation (EQUINOO)

[1] There is an established evidence of climatic teleconnection between El Niño– Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) during June through September. Against the long-recognized negative correlation between ISMR and ENSO, unusual experiences of some recent years motivate the search for some other causal climatic variable, influencing the rainfall over the Indian ...
