Modelling of Resistive Type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter for HVDC Grids

The protection of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids is a challenge considering that the system must detect, locate, and interrupt large fault currents in few milliseconds. Resistive type superconducting limiters (R-SFCL) can help solve difficult task, reducing extremely demanding ratings HVDC circuit breakers. This paper presents different approaches to model R-SFCLs order analyze their suitability for assessing performance grid protection, including step model, exponential RQ magneto-thermal model. In first instance, R-SFCL models are evaluated test parameterisation select most adequate study grids. finally chosen its simplicity but closer behavior magneto thermal terms resistance dependency evolution curve.
