Modelling biodiversity responses to land use in areas of cocoa cultivation

چکیده

Interest in economically and ecologically sustainable cocoa has grown recent years. Cocoa-based agroforestry systems are promoted as a potential win-win option for long-term yields, multiple benefits, the preservation of biodiversity. Yet, even though studies have shown such agroforests can support biodiversity, their value relative to natural areas open-land is not fully known. We estimated biodiversity intactness (BII) different land uses associated with cocoa-driven land-use change using mixed-effects models. distinguished between established under shade those from open land, compared these intensively cropland (including monoculture), primary secondary forest. found that species richness cocoa-based systems, both planted shade, was lower than forests but higher systems. However, we history influenced agroforests: whilst open-land-derived forest-derived share similar richness, community similarity forest The results highlight high levels BII be sustained by retaining existing also incentivising enhance degraded delivering co-benefits. Importantly, planning seeking achieve benefits should consider direction use transitions.

Land-use, Land-cover Changes and Biodiversity Loss

During Earth's history, species extinction has probably been caused by modifications of the physical environment after impacts such as meteorites or volcanic activity. On the contrary, the actual extinction of species is mainly a result of human activities, namely any form of land use that causes the conversion of vast areas to settlement, agriculture, and forestry, resulting in habitat destruc...

Key areas for conserving United States’ biodiversity likely threatened by future land use change

A major challenge for biodiversity conservation is to mitigate the effects of future environmental change, such as land use, in important areas for biodiversity conservation. In the United States, recent conservation efforts by The Nature Conservancy and partners have identified and mapped the nation’s Areas of Biodiversity Significance (ABS), representing the best remaining habitats for the fu...

Impacts of land-use management on ecosystem services and biodiversity: an agent-based modelling approach

The science of ecosystem service (ES) mapping has become increasingly sophisticated over the past 20 years, and examples of successfully integrating ES into management decisions at national and sub-national scales have begun to emerge. However, increasing model sophistication and accuracy-and therefore complexity-may trade-off with ease of use and applicability to real-world decision-making con...

Size-dependent resistance of protected areas to land-use change.

One of the major threats facing protected areas (PAs) is land-use change and habitat loss. We assessed the impact of land-use change on PAs. The majority of parks have been effective at protecting the ecosystems within their borders, even in areas with significant land-use pressures. More in particular, the capacity of PAs to slow down habitat degradation and to favour habitat restoration is cl...

Modelling with stakeholders to integrate biodiversity into land-use planning - Lessons learned in Réunion Island (Western Indian Ocean)

This paper considers participatory modelling to integrate biodiversity conservation into land use planning and to facilitate the incorporation of ecological knowledge into public decision making for spatial planning. Réunion Island has experienced rapid urban and agricultural expansion, which threaten its unique biodiversity. In this context, we designed three participatory modelling sequences,...
