Modeling persistence of coarse woody debris residuals in boreal forests as an ecological property

چکیده

There is a trade-off between leaving coarse woody debris (CWD) in the stand, providing desirable ecosystem services, and harvesting it. To consider this trade-off, forest management needs to model describing decomposition of CWD. When trunk lying on ground, it can be attacked by microorganisms faster than when still standing. Current models fail account for these local differences processes, which may give rise errors estimation stand C balance. We extended Q represent influences tree species position wood. utilized data from two studies long-term deadwood forests. first calibrated whole dataset, then divided into different CWD classes, allowed some parameters vary classes. The calibrations were performed within Bayesian framework, statistically sound comparison calibration results. difference remaining mass predicted versions model, one considering single all classes specific depended class but was general substantial. Some modeled with parameterization, resulted stocks after 50 yr 1–5 times less that parameterization model. Logs decayed snags, birch wood much pine spruce wood, little conifers. Russian decomposed somewhat Finnish Incorporating our calibration, specifically processes driving decay locally, balance forests change estimates substantially.

Postfire dynamics of black spruce coarse woody debris in northern boreal forest of Quebec

In this study, postfire coarse woody debris (CWD) dynamics in northern Quebec, Canada, were assessed using a 29-year chronosequence. Postfire woody-debris storage, decomposition rates, and variation of nitrogen and carbon contents of black spruce CWD (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) are estimated. The decomposition rate for postfire snags is exceptionally slow (k = 0.00), while the decomposition rat...

Dynamics of Coarse Woody Debris Characteristics in the Qinling Mountain Forests in China

Coarse woody debris (CWD) is an essential component in defining the structure and function of forest ecosystems. Long-term dynamics of CWD characteristics not only affect the release rates of chemical elements from CWD, but also the species diversity of inhabiting plants, animals, insects, and microorganisms as well as the overall health of ecosystems. However, few quantitative studies have bee...

Overview of Agents and Patterns of Mortality and Resulting Coarse Woody Debris Recruitment in Western Forests

We present an overview of many of the mortality agents in western coniferous forests of the United States that are responsible for coarse woody debris recruitment under natural conditions. Patterns and scale of occurrence of mortality agents for the six western USDA Forest Service Regions are examined at both historic and projected-risk time periods. The data indicates that bark beetles have be...

Regional Distribution and Dynamics of Coarse Woody Debris in Midwestern Old-Growth Forests

Old-growth forests have been noted for containing significant quantities of deadwood. However, there has been no coordinated effort to quantify the deadwood component of old-growth remnants across large regions of temperate deciduous forest. We present results of a regional inventorythatquantifies and examines regional and temporal trends fordeadwood in upland old-growth forest remnants within ...

Accumulation and Connectivity of Coarse Woody Debris in Partial Harvest and Unmanaged Relict Forests

When a tree dies, it continues to play an important ecological role within forests. Coarse woody debris (CWD), including standing deadwood (SDW) and downed deadwood (DDW), is an important functional component of forest ecosystems, particularly for many dispersal-limited saproxylic taxa and for metapopulation dynamics across landscapes. Processes, such as natural disturbance or management, modif...
