Modeling of Continuous Slug Flow Cooling Crystallization towards Pharmaceutical Applications

The rising trend towards continuous production in the field of small-scale crystallization has generated many creative concepts for apparatuses active pharmaceutical ingredients. One these promising is Slug Flow Crystallizer (SFC), which enables adjustment particle size distribution and achievement high yields through its alternating slug flow. To realize understand inside SFC, experimental effort been necessary until now. Therefore, a mechanistic model considering hydrodynamics flow, energy mass balances, phenomena growth agglomeration apparatus was developed. Its purpose to improve understanding process, estimate effects operating parameters on target properties, predict behavior different substance systems with minimal effort. Successful modeling validated results system l-alanine/water. Furthermore, robustness evaluated, guidelines were presented, enabling transfer new systems.
