Modeling intentional agency: a neo-Gricean framework

چکیده

Abstract This paper analyzes three contrasting strategies for modeling intentional agency in contemporary analytic philosophy of mind and action, draws parallels between them similar scientific model-construction. Gricean involves identifying primitive building blocks agency, up from such to prototypically agential behaviors. Analogical is based on picking out an exemplary type which used as a model other types. Theoretical reasoning about terms some domain-general framework lawlike regularities, no detailed reference particular or exemplars (although it may involve coarse-grained heuristic them). Given the procedural approaches that they employ different types knowledge embody, are argued provide mutually complementary perspectives agency.

The Border Wars: a Neo-gricean Perspective

In reports Þled from several fronts in the semantics/pragmatics border wars, I seek to bolster the loyalist (neo-)Gricean forces against various recent revisionist sorties, including (but not limited to) the relevance-theoretic view on which the maxims (or more speciÞcally their sole surviving descendant, the principle of relevance) inform truthconditional content through the determination of “...

Dynamics, Agency and Intentional Action

The complex systems approach to cognitive science invites a new understanding of extended cognitive systems. According to this understanding, extended cognitive systems are heterogenous, composed of brain, body, and niche, non-linearly coupled to one another. In our previous work, we have argued that this view of cognitive systems, as non-linearly coupled brain-body-niche systems, promises conc...

Intentional joint agency: shared intention lite

Philosophers have proposed accounts of shared intentions that aim at capturing what makes a joint action intentionally joint. On these accounts, having a shared intention typically presupposes cognitively and conceptually demanding theory of mind skills. Yet, young children engage in what appears to be intentional, cooperative joint action long before they master these skills. In this paper, I ...

Intentional binding and higher order agency experience.

Recent research has shown that human instrumental action is associated with systematic changes in time perception: The interval between a voluntary action and an outcome is perceived as shorter than the interval between a physically similar involuntary movement and an outcome. The study by, Ebert and Wegner (2010) suggests that this change in time perception is related to higher order agency ex...

Intentional binding and the sense of agency: a review.

It is nearly 10 years since Patrick Haggard and colleagues first reported the 'intentional binding' effect (Haggard, Clark, & Kalogeras, 2002). The intentional binding effect refers to the subjective compression of the temporal interval between a voluntary action and its external sensory consequence. Since the first report, considerable interest has been generated and a fascinating array of stu...
