Stability of gravity-capillary waves generated by a moving pressure disturbance in water of finite depth

In previous work, we investigated two-dimensional steady gravity-capillary waves generated by a localized pressure distribution moving with constant speed U in water of finite depth h . Localized solitary waves can only exist in subcritical flows where the Froude number F = U/(gh) < 1 , and were found using a combination of numerical simulations of the fully nonlinear inviscid, irrotational equ...

Water waves generated by a moving bottom

Tsunamis are often generated by a moving sea bottom. This paper deals with the case where the tsunami source is an earthquake. The linearized water-wave equations are solved analytically for various sea bottom motions. Numerical results based on the analytical solutions are shown for the free-surface profiles, the horizontal and vertical velocities as well as the bottom pressure.

Capillary-gravity waves generated by a slow moving object.

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the capillary-gravity waves created by a small object moving steadily at the water-air interface along a circular trajectory. It is well established that, for straight uniform motion, no steady waves appear at velocities below the minimum phase velocity c(min)=23 cm s(-1). We demonstrate that no such velocity threshold exists for a steady circular...

Stability of steady gravity waves generated by a moving localised pressure disturbance in water of finite depth

We study the stability of the steady waves forced by a moving localised pressure disturbance in water of finite depth. The steady waves take the form of a downstream wavetrain for subcritical flow, but for supercritical flow there is a solution branch for each specified forcing term, which has two localised solitarylike solutions for each Froude number, a small-amplitude and a large-amplitude s...

Gravity-capillary lumps generated by a moving pressure source.

The nonlinear wave pattern generated by a localized pressure source moving over a liquid free surface at speeds below the minimum phase speed (c{min}) of linear gravity-capillary waves is investigated experimentally and theoretically. At these speeds, freely propagating fully localized solitary waves, or "lumps," are known theoretically to be possible. For pressure-source speeds far below c{min...
