Model Predictive Control for Automotive Climate Control Systems via Value Function Approximation

Among the auxiliary loads in light-duty vehicles, air conditioning system is single largest energy consumer. For electrified impact of heating and cooling becomes even more significant, as they compete with powertrain for battery use can significantly reduce range or performance. While considerable work has been made field optimal management vehicles optimization vehicle velocity eco-driving, few contributions have addressed application energy-optimal control loads. This letter proposes an strategy thermal powertrain, based on Model Predictive Control. Starting from a nonlinear model vapor compression refrigeration that captures dynamics refrigerant heat exchangers power consumption system, constrained multi-objective problem formulated to while tracking desired set point. An efficient implementation MPC proposed real-time applications by introducing terminal cost obtained approximation global solution.
