چکیده

The comparison between intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) and volume-modulated arc (VMAT) plans, based on models of normal tissue complication probabilities (NTCP), can support the choice radiation modality. IMPT irradiation plans for 50 patients with head neck tumours originally treated photon have been robustly optimised against density setup uncertainties. dose distribution has calculated a Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm. was dose-volume parameters in organs at risk (OARs) NTCP-calculations xerostomia, sticky saliva, dysphagia tube feeding using Langendijk's model-based approach. While target volumes is similar, show better protection OARs. Therefore, it not high confirmation that constitutes advantage protons, but reduction mid-to-low levels compared to photons. This work investigates what extent advantages are beneficial patient's post-therapeutic quality life (QoL). As result, approximately one third examined benefit significantly from regard possible late side effects. Clinical data needed confirm calculations.

Reoptimization of IMPT plans based on linear energy transfer

Figure 6 illustrates the simplified RBE model (equation 3) used in this work. Figure 6a shows 9 the physical dose di for 10 9 protons for a single pencil beam, delivering approximately 4.5 10 Gy at the Bragg peak, which is located at the distal edge of the target volume. Figure 6b 11 shows the additional biological dose c L̄idi in Gy for c = 0.04 μm/keV. The sum of c L̄idi and 12 di yields the RB...

Treatment planning comparison of IMPT, VMAT and 4π radiotherapy for prostate cases

BACKGROUND Intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT), non-coplanar 4π intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) represent the most advanced treatment methods based on heavy ion and X-rays, respectively. Here we compare their performance for prostate cancer treatment. METHODS Ten prostate patients were planned using IMPT with robustness optimizat...

Comparison of Optimised Treatment Plans for Radiosurgery and Conformal Radiotherapy

The aim of conformal radiation therapy and of radiosurgery (Gamma Knife and Multi-beam radiosurgery) is to irradiate the pathological target volume with ionising radiation while avoiding as well as possible the surrounding normal tissues. Considering the accuracy of these treatments, it is interesting to compare the different techniques to evaluate their effectiveness. This comparison involves ...

Optimization of prostate cancer radiotherapy using of a spacer gel, volumetric modulated arc therapy and a single biological organ at risk objective

Background: The aim was to evaluate the benefit of technical advances for treatment planning: introduction of a hydrogel spacer, VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy) and a single biological organ at risk objective for the rectum and bladder. Initial standard was a step-and-shoot IMRT (intensity modulated radiotherapy) without a spacer and conventional organ at risk objectives.  Material...

Evaluation of Volumetric Doses of Organs at Risk in Carcinoma Cervix Patients with HDR Intracavitary Brachytherapy and Comparison of CT-based and Conventional Plans

Background: Brachytherapy treatment planning in cervix carcinoma patients using two dimensional (2D) orthogonal images provides only point dose estimates while CT-based planning provides volumetric dose assessment helping in understanding the correlation between morbidity and the dose to organs at risk (OARs) and treatment volume. Objective: Aim of present study is to compare Internationa...
