Mobile Phones and Mozambique Farmers: Less Asymmetric Information and More Trader Competition?

چکیده

We investigate the impact of search costs farmers and traders on prices, by measuring to what extent introduction mobile phones in Mozambique has affected maize producer retail market prices margins. Estimations are based weekly recorded white grain, from July 1997 December 2009, for 15 major markets Mozambique. find a margin increase varying 6.4% 11.5%, drop 8.1% 14.0%, supporting bias benefits towards traders. Hence, not less asymmetric information more trader competition, but rather reverse: benefit exploiting phone opportunities. Estimation results robust non-random roll-out network various other threats. Margin impacts correlate significantly with terminal prices. Household survey data yield an farm-gate that is consistent key result this study. Several farmer characteristics reveal weak plausible correlation

Get More With Less: Near Real-Time Image Clustering on Mobile Phones

Machine learning algorithms, in conjunction with user data, hold the promise of revolutionizing the way we interact with our phones, and indeed their widespread adoption in the design of apps bear testimony to this promise. However, currently, the computationally expensive segments of the learning pipeline, such as feature extraction and model training, are offloaded to the cloud, resulting in ...

The N-effect: more competitors, less competition.

This article introduces the N-effect-the discovery that increasing the number of competitors (N) can decrease competitive motivation. Studies 1a and 1b found evidence that average test scores (e.g., SAT scores) fall as the average number of test takers at test-taking venues increases. Study 2 found that individuals trying to finish an easy quiz among the top 20% in terms of speed finished signi...

Energy Aware Information Retrieval from Mobile Phones

On mobile phones, Information Retrieval (IR) applications that search over remote collections consume significant energy as a result of network activity. Typical IR applications mainly focus on retrieving and presenting relevant documents to users in an effective manner and do not take into account the cost of network data transfer. Despite the improvements in network access, energy consumption...

Liquidity and Asset Returns Under Asymmetric Information and Imperfect Competition

We analyze how asymmetric information and imperfect competition affect liquidity and asset prices. Our model has three periods: agents are identical in the first, become heterogeneous and trade in the second, and consume asset payoffs in the third. We show that asymmetric information in the second period raises ex ante expected asset returns in the first, comparing both to the case where all pr...

Robust Newsvendor Competition under Asymmetric Information

We generalize analysis of competition among newsvendors to a setting in which competitors possess asymmetric information about future demand realizations, and this information is limited to knowledge of the support of demand distribution. In such a setting, traditional expectation-based optimization criteria are not adequate and therefore we focus on the alternative criterion used in the robust...
