Misinformation Paradox

Misinformation can be easily spread with the click of a button, but cause irreversible harm and negatively impact news consumers’ ability to discern false information. Some prior work suggests that older adults may engage (read, share, or believe) misinformation at higher rates than others. However, engagement explanations vary. In an effort understand adults' better, we investigate experiences through their perception media experiences. Analyzing 69 semi-structured interviews ages 59+ from US, Netherlands, Bosnia, Turkey, find people who have decades potential exposure experience both online traditional reached state cynicism in which they distrust most, even all, receive. Yet, despite this cynicism, study rarely fact-check see continue read share distrust. These findings suggest paradoxical reaction addition such as cognitive issues digital literacy, part explain misinformation. Thus, introduce paradox, additional area research worth exploring.
