Abstract The choir of Saint Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent boasts one the most prestigious ensembles Baroque funerary sculpture Low Countries: four magnificent episcopal tombs that reflect post-Tridentine élan Southern Netherlands and underline reinforced position bishops during Counter-Reformation. Dominated by a unifying black white colour scheme, these monuments form an ‘episcopal dynastic mausoleum’ following model groups royal tombs. Besides commemorating highlighting their prestige, also served to adorn cathedral thus glorify God his Church. Philippe argues had didactic purposes too, rooted theory teaching images linked Ars moriendi tradition. By presenting as exemplars Catholic piety, this sculptural ensemble encouraged viewers seek good death.
