Mining, Waste and Environmental Thought on the Central African Copperbelt, 1950-2000

Since the early twentieth century, copper-mining industry on Zambian and Congolese Copperbelt has moved millions of tonnes earth dramatically reshaped landscape. Nonetheless, mining companies, governments even residents largely overlooked adverse environmental aspects until 1990s. By scrutinising knowledge production Central African from 1950s late 1990s, particularly regarding notions 'waste', this article problematises silencing impacts mining. To make history visible, examines forestry policies, medical services protests. Moreover, by historically tracing emergence consciousness, it contextualises sudden 'discovery' pollution in 1990s as a local (inter)national phenomenon. Drawing rare archival oral sources, provides one first cross-border histories Copperbelt.
