Minimising Coal Mining’s Impact on Biodiversity: Artificial Soils for Post-Mining Land Reclamation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Coal mining and the energy industry generate large amounts of solid waste, which must be disposed in landfills lead to numerous environmental problems. This paper presents a method for creating artificial soil mixtures based on an EU-funded international research project called RECOVERY. The main idea behind proposed solution is safe use coal combustion by-products (energetic slag decarbonation lime), waste (aggregate sealing material) spent mushroom compost as components soils. Laboratory tests substitutes showed low concentrations heavy metals high macronutrient content, adequate proper plant growth. As result two-year study application cover 4000 m2 testing ground, species characteristics mesotrophic, dry meadow, ruderal segregated vegetation were found. In second year situ study, apparent reduction salinity was observed. principal component analysis confirmed that decreasing positively affected meadow species. contrast, levels no adverse effect mesotrophic vegetation. results demonstrated applying covers elaborated from industrial valuable recovering high-acidity mine heaps.

Reclamation on Land Disturbed by Surface Mining in Romania

Within the Oltenia surface mining region of Romania, 14,890 ha have been disturbed and only 1,002 ha have been reclaimed. The majority of this disturbance has involved agricultural land (12,208 ha), of which only a small amount has been reclaimed (552 ha). Forest land disturbed by surface mining in this region amounted to 2,682 ha, of which only 450 ha have been reclaimed. Therefore, huge land ...

Vetiver System for Land Reclamation

Land degradation is becoming one of the severest environmental issues in the world, especially in developing nations. Land degradation, usually accompanied by soil erosion, always results in a decrease or complete loss of land productivity, and produces on-site and off-site pollution to soil and water. The methods for land reclamation are various, including physical, chemical and biological. Th...

An intelligent decision support system for revegetation and reclamation of land contaminated from coal mine wastes

Abandoned coal mine wastes can result in severe pollution and have aesthetic impact on the local environment. A range of reclamation techniques is available for substrate but only through the use of vegetation to stabilize coal mine wastes can complete long-term rehabilitation be achieved. Experimentation has been undertaken at coal mine sites to attempt to elucidate and overcome limitations to...
