Mineralogical and geochemical characterization of fossil bones from a Miocene marine Konservat-Lagerstätte

چکیده

Fossil bones, together with teeth, are the most common remains of vertebrates that could manage to get preserved over geological times, providing information on diagenetic and fossilization processes occurred in depositional paleoenvironment. bones from marine vertebrate Konservat-Lagerstätte East Pisco Basin Sacaco area (Peru) show a high variety different textural chemical features, suggestive variably contributing path. At macroscopic scale, bone samples can be grouped into six categories basis color (red gray white) hardness (which relates mineralization degree); case studies found between these categories. Microscopically, original microstructure tissue, both compact cancellous, is well all studied samples, differences cavity fillings, distribution microcracks, presence Fe oxides diverse types. The composition mineralogy correspond fluorapatite. Differences color, degree geochemistry interpreted terms paths, burial at seafloor exposure present-day desert environment. paths strongly conditioned by factors controlling interplay mechanisms apatite dissolution-recrystallization dolomite precipitation (formation carbonate concretions) as fixation iron finely disseminated sulfides very early stages fossilization.

New Fossil Scorpion from the Chiapas Amber Lagerstätte

A new species of scorpion is described based on a rare entire adult male preserved in a cloudy amber from Miocene rocks in the Chiapas Highlands, south of Mexico. The amber-bearing beds in Chiapas constitute a Conservation Lagerstätte with outstanding organic preservation inside plant resin. The new species is diagnosed as having putative characters that largely correspond with the genus Tityus...

Oldest Near-Complete Acanthodian: The First Vertebrate from the Silurian Bertie Formation Konservat-Lagerstätte, Ontario

BACKGROUND The relationships between early jawed vertebrates have been much debated, with cladistic analyses yielding little consensus on the position (or positions) of acanthodians with respect to other groups. Whereas one recent analysis showed various acanthodians (classically known as 'spiny sharks') as stem osteichthyans (bony fishes) and others as stem chondrichthyans, another shows the a...

Río Tinto: A Geochemical and Mineralogical Terrestrial Analogue of Mars

The geomicrobiological characterization of the water column and sediments of Río Tinto (Huelva, Southwestern Spain) have proven the importance of the iron and the sulfur cycles, not only in generating the extreme conditions of the habitat (low pH, high concentration of toxic heavy metals), but also in maintaining the high level of microbial diversity detected in the basin. It has been proven th...

First mammal fossil locality from the late Miocene of Zagros, western Iran

A new and the first mammal fossil locality from the Zagros Basin of Iran is reported here. The fossil locality, known as Dimeh, is located in the Lorestan province, west of Iran. The fauna includes abundant bovid cranial remains, mostly representing boselaphines and palaeoryxoids, as well as gazelles and spiral horned antelopes. Hipparionine horses similar to Hippotherium group are also represe...

A fossil tarantula (Araneae: Theraphosidae) from Miocene Chiapas amber, Mexico

A fossil tarantula (Araneae: Mygalomorphae: Theraphosidae) is described from an exuvium in Tertiary (Miocene) Chiapas amber, Simojovel region, Chiapas State, Mexico. It is difficult to assign it further taxonomically, but it is the first mygalomorph recorded from Chiapas amber and only the second unequivocal record of a fossil theraphosid. With a carapace length of ca. 0.9 cm and an estimated l...
