Millisecond Magnetars

چکیده
Two classes of X-ray/$\gamma$-ray sources, the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars have been identified with isolated, slowly spinning magnetars, neutron stars whose emission draws energy from their extremely strong magnetic field ($\sim 10^{15}-10^{16}$ G). Magnetars are believed to form millisecond spin period represent an important fraction whole population young stars. Newborn magnetars can convert very quickly rotational into electromagnetic and/or gravitational waves, by virtue fields fast spins. This chapter provides a brief summary astrophysical problems scenarios in which play key role: these include Ray Bursts, Supernovae, Gravitational Wave events Fast Radio Bursts.

Millisecond Proto-Magnetars & Gamma Ray Bursts
— In the seconds after core collapse and explosion, a thermal neutrinodriven wind emerges from the cooling, deleptonizing newly-born neutron star. If the neutron star has a large-scale magnetar-strength surface magnetic field and millisecond rotation period, then the wind is driven primarily by magneto-centrifugal slinging, and only secondarily by neutrino interactions. The strong magnetic fiel...
متن کاملAssessing Millisecond Proto-magnetars as Grb Central Engines
Magnetars are a sizable subclass of the neutron star census. Their very high magnetic field strengths are thought to be a consequence of rapid (millisecond) rotation at birth in a successful core-collapse supernova. In their first tens of seconds of existence, magnetars transition from hot, extended “proto-”magnetars to the cooled and magnetically-dominated objects we identify ∼ 10 years later ...
متن کاملOptical and X-ray emission from stable millisecond magnetars formed from the merger of binary neutron stars
The coalescence of binary neutron stars (NSs) may in some cases produce a stable massive NS remnant rather than a black hole. Due to the substantial angular momentum from the binary, such a remnant is born rapidly rotating and likely acquires a strong magnetic field (a ‘millisecond magnetar’). Magnetic spin-down deposits a large fraction of the rotational energy from the magnetar behind the sma...
متن کاملTiming Properties of Magnetars
We study the pulse morphologies and pulse amplitudes of thermally emitting neutron stars with ultrastrong magnetic fields. The beaming of the radiation emerging from a magnetar was recently shown to be predominantly non-radial, with a small pencil and a broad fan component. We show that the combination of this radiation pattern with the effects of strong lensing in the gravitational field of th...
متن کاملPulsar Physics without Magnetars
Almost 40 years after the discovery of pulsars – and despite a plethora of secured data on them – pul-sar theory is still beset by a number of fundamental inconsistencies. In this short contribution, I will argue that (i) magnetars do not exist, (ii) (ordinary) pulsars turnoff (or 'die') when their wind pressure falls short of keeping the CSM at a safe distance, exceeding 10 15 cm, whereupon th...
