Microwave hydrothermal processing of the invasive macroalgae Sargassum muticum within a green biorefinery scheme

• MHT allowed the recovery of fucoidan saccharides and phenolics in liquor. Glucan to glucose conversion up 100% was obtained saccharification Sm. This study deals multiproduct valorization invasive macroalgae Sargassum muticum within a green concept using microwave hydrothermal treatment. Temperatures 160 180 °C for 0–60 (severities 1.62–3.54) evaluated, allowing liquid phase rich fucoidan-derived compounds (up 4.81 g/L), oligomers antioxidant capacity 2.85 TE/L by ABTS assay), high-enzymatically susceptible solid (glucan 76–100% 9 h) suitable bioethanol production (20.5 g/L 18 h, corresponding 96% ethanol yield). Moreover, energy pretreatments’ temperature–time binomial evaluated showing significant differences, demonstrating advantages as alternative heating pretreatment.
