Microscopic Traffic Simulation as a Decision Support System for Road Diet and Tactical Urbanism Strategies

Urban street networks in the United States have been primarily designed for automobile traffic with negligible considerations to non-motorized transportation users. Due environmental issues and quality of life concerns, communities are reclaiming spaces active modes slowing speeds their downtown. Moreover, tactical urbanism, i.e., use space innovative purposes other than moving traffic, is becoming attractive due reduced travel demand need outdoor activities age COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides details modeling an urban downtown network (in City San Jose) using microscopic simulation. The model then applied evaluate effectiveness design changes at varying scenarios. microsimulation approach was chosen because it allows detailed visualization networks, including movements individual vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians. change demonstrated here involves one-way two-way conversion, but framework network-wide impact evaluation may also be used complete conversions. base conditions tested under different reduction scenarios (10%, 20%, 30%) identify corridors city which urbanism strategies (e.g., open-air dining) best accommodated. a as part decision support system effectively implement streets/tactical strategies.
