Microscopic pulmonary embolisation of an indwelling central venous catheter with granulomatous inflammatory response.

Indwelling catheters can disintegrate into tiny fragments and embolise. Once the fragments are detected radiographically, they can be removed using vascular intervention techniques. Rarely, indwelling catheters dwindle into inextricable pieces that embolise into minute pulmonary vessels and lymphatics, causing granulomatous changes microscopically. The present study reports a 54-yr-old female w...

Bronchial erosion by an indwelling central venous catheter.

Despite improved technology, central venous catheters are associated with many complications that occur usually within 48 h of placement. We report a 42-year-old man with a rare erosion of a venous catheter (Silastic) into a bronchus 2 years after its insertion.

Migration of Indwelling Central Venous Catheter and Fatal Hydrothorax

Central venous catheter complications can be related to insertion, indwelling, or extraction. Most of the times, immediate complications are anticipated and managed; whereas, delayed complications can go unnoticed. In the case discussed here, migration and dislodgement of catheter tip resulted in delayed hydrothorax and sudden death of a 9-month-old female infant.

Transluminal Removal of a Fractured and Embolized Indwelling Central Venous Catheter in the Pulmonary Artery

Vascular catheters are associated with complications such as infection, thrombosis and stenosis. The embolization of a venous catheter fragment is a rare complication. A 39-year-old woman underwent placement of a totally implantable venous access device for chemotherapy to treat a recurrent liposarcoma of the left thigh. The "pinch-off sign" was noted on a routine chest X-ray but that was ignor...

Problems associated with indwelling central venous catheters.

Forty nine Broviac or Hickman indwelling central venous catheters were inserted in 36 patients with haematological and neoplastic diseases for indications including young age, intensity of treatment, and psychological attitude. Sixteen patients suffered 29 episodes of infection related to the catheter bacteraemia (0.68 episodes per 100 days of catheter use). Infections occurred much more common...
