Microplastics alter feeding strategies of a coral reef organism

چکیده
Increasing marine microplastic pollution has detrimentally impacted organismal physiology and ecosystem functioning. While previous studies document negative effects of microplastics on coral reef animals, the potential responses organisms such as large benthic foraminifera (LBF) are largely unknown. Here, we impact heterotrophic feeding behavior LBF. Specimens Amphistegina gibbosa were incubated in three experimental treatments: (1) Artemia sp. nauplii only; (2) pristine particles (3) choice microplastic. Feeding evaluated 24 h after initiation treatments. A separate experiment was conducted to compare effect conditioned vs. Our results indicate that A. is able selectively feed Artemia, avoiding interactions with However, presence causes similar interaction rates Artemia. This suggests longer residence times may have a larger facultative detritivores.

Ecomorphology of Feeding in Coral Reef Fishes
Once an observer gets past the stunning coloration, surely no feature inspires wonder in coral reef fishes so much as their morphological diversity. From large-mouthed groupers, to beaked parrot fish, barbeled goatfish, long-snouted trumpet fish, snaggletoothed tusk fish, tube-mouthed planktivores, and fatlipped sweet lips, coral reef fishes display a dazzling array of feeding structures. And, ...
متن کاملBIFURCATION ANALYSIS OF A DDE MODEL OF THE CORAL REEF
In this paper, first we discuss a local stability analysis of model was introduced by P. J. Mumby et. al. (2007), with $frac{gM^{2}}{M+T}$ as the functional response term. We conclude that the grazing intensity is the important parameter to control the existence or extinction of the coral reef. Next, we consider this model under the influence of the time delay as the bifurcat...

متن کاملHydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia
As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
متن کاملResistance vs recovery: morphological strategies of coral reef sponges
1. An inverse association between ability to regenerate and structural complexity (i.e. internal differentiation and integration), illustrated by comparisons among animal phyla, suggests a dichotomy between suites of morphological traits that promote recovery from damage vs traits that promote resistance to damage. 2. The phylum Porifera is particularly suited for exploration of relationships a...
