Micronutrient supplementation in pregnancy: a KAP survey with healthcare consultants in India

Background: Maternal nutrition during pregnancy is a serious public health issue as it negatively impacts women and their children. The most commonly used nutritional interventions are folic acid omega-3 fatty (n-3 FA). This survey aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude perception towards acid, n-3 FA other supplementation amongst healthcare practitioners (HCPs). Methods: A close-ended questionnaire-based was distributed among obstetricians-gynaecologists HCPs overlooking pregnant lactating between July September 2022 in India. An excel based analysis performed once completed. Results: total of 500 valid questionnaires were collected. Only 55% them recommended FA, whereas 45% did not recommend they believed that typical Indian diet provides enough supplements necessary. majority (58.91%) prescribers prescribed all women, followed by older with history abortion high-risk pregnancy. Both eicosapentaenoic docosahexaenoic favoured clinical practice. In addition, 56.8% at dose 5 mg/day for patients bad obstetric history, while 43.2% 1 mg/day. Conclusions: Supplements adequate can reduce likelihood poor maternal foetal outcomes pregnancies. Nutritional cost-effective safe risk-reduction method, given high prevalence complications. However, more knowledge dissemination on supplements, micronutrients essential.
