چکیده

We present a novel micromechanics-based phase field approach to model crack initiation and propagation in carbon nanotube (CNT) based composites. The constitutive mechanical fracture properties of the nanocomposites are first estimated by mean-field homogenisation approach. Inhomogeneous dispersion CNTs is accounted for means equivalent inclusions representing agglomerated CNTs. Detailed parametric analyses presented assess effect main micromechanical upon behaviour CNT-based second step proposed incorporates previously into simulate growth modelling capabilities framework demonstrated through three paradigmatic case studies involving mode I mixed conditions.

Manufacture of Cnt Reinforced Polymer Composites Using Nanofibers Containing Cnt

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), discovered by Japanese scientist Sumio Iijima, have outstanding material properties such as mechanical, thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties. For example, CNTs are not only lighter than common irons, but also 100 times stronger than the irons. However, CNTs are so tiny, that is, surface area per volume is relatively large. Consequently, they tend to agglomerate....

Fracture Toughness of Cellular Solids using Finite Element Based Micromechanics

Micromechanical methods to predict the fracture behavior and estimate the fracture toughness of cellular solids and foams are presented in this paper. The microstructure of the foam is modeled using finite elements. The struts of foam are modeled using either structural elements such as beams or three-dimensional solid elements. A portion of the foam containing an edge crack is modeled. Displac...

Modelling Cochlear Micromechanics

The cochlea is an organ of the hearing system, whose basic function is to map sounds of different frequencies onto corresponding characteristic positions along the basilar membrane (BM). Sound-induced BM vibration is transformed into deflection of stereocilia on the hair cells, which then encodes the sound as neural signals for perception. Most cochlear models used to describe the BM vibration ...

Fracture Toughness of Polypropylene-Based Particulate Composites

The fracture behaviour of polymers is strongly affected by the addition of rigid particles. Several features of the particles have a decisive influence on the values of the fracture toughness: shape and size, chemical nature, surface nature, concentration by volume, and orientation. Among those of thermoplastic matrix, polypropylene (PP) composites are the most industrially employed for many di...
